Monkey's Fist Necklace & Earrings The Monkey’s Fist knot, wound around a Mardi Gras bead for luck, in modern times is usually tied around a baseball to create a “Heaving Line” – a length of rope with a heavy weight on one end and used for throwing to the dock. The loose end is attached to the ship’s large diameter mooring line and then pulled to the dock to secure the ship. This Monkey’s Fist is attached to a Lanyard Weave and finished with a Barrel Knot. The Barrel Knot was woven around wooden kegs to protect them from breakage in the ship’s hold during transit. The entire necklace is made with one continuous 15 foot long piece of synthetic line, is machine washable and will neither shrink nor stretch. Available in Red/White/Blue beads to honor the military and Pink beads for Breast Cancer Awareness. Necklace is $15, Earrings are $15 per pair. Turks's Head Bracelet The Turk’s Head knot is used aboard ship to repair a broken mast and to mark the king spoke on a ship’s wheel, which is vertical when the ship’s rudder is neutral or straight. The knot has been used for hundreds of years and legend has it that when the “iron men in their wooden ships” first arrived in the Middle East they discovered that the shape of a folded turban resembled the knot they were already using. The name stuck and is still used to this day. The bracelet is made with a continuous piece of synthetic line and will not shrink or stretch.
